In El Salvador the main phone companies use the GSM 850, 900 and 1900 digital systems, so roaming services may be available through your local phone service provider, however generally speaking charges for such calls can be very high.
By purchasing a SIM card from any of the major cell phone service providers and installing it
in your phone you can avoid such charges. Prepaid cards can be bought to add credit to the account and generally cost less than $5 US. Calling to the United States and Canada using such cards is very inexpensive; it costs only 10 cents per minute.
If your cell phone is not compatible with a SIM card, or does not run on the same system, you can buy a cell phone for around $15 US. It won’t be anything fancy, but it will get the job done. When connecting your phone or purchasing a cell you can choose from any of the major phone companies in El Salvador: Tigo, Movistar, Claro, RED Infelton and Digicel.
