El Salvador has a pretty good feeling that whoever gets elected next year is going to have an impact on their country. In fact, 43% think that either Obama or McCain taking office will make a difference in El Salvador. Which do they prefer?
Gallup Polls has the answer. From May to September 2008 they conducted surveys in 70 countries to see who the world preferred to see elected into the Presidential office in the United States.
Despite the fact that they prefer Obama over McCain, the difference between the two candidates is one of the narrowest in all South American countries. Only 24% prefer Obama, while 14% would vote for McCain if they could. The other 63%? Undecided.
El Salvador has been receiving a lot of attention due to its vicious gang activity and drug trafficking. This Gringo feels that many realize that even though at present US world relations are pointed toward the Middle East and Russia, with Venezuela being thrown into the mix, the eyes of the US President could turn to El Salvador.
Since El Salvador doesn’t have one of the best reputations, it seems that most would prefer Obama to be the one scrutinizing the country. His diplomatic outlook and general stance on foreign relations would possibly represent a better government under which El Salvador could finally complete its transformation. However, Obama’s tax reforms could take away from the increasing number of travelers and investors looking into El Salvador.
Either way, El Salvador has a ways to go before it becomes the next Costa Rica, and it could use all the help it can get from increased foreign interest.
What do you think? Would Obama or McCain be the better president as far as El Salvador is concerned?
