Tasty Variety at the Food Festival In Juayúa

Okay, so one way to enjoy a copious amount of pupusas, elote loco, horchata de arroz, and other typical Salvadoran food is at the Juayúa Food Fair held every Sunday. (Pronounced WHY-OOH-AH, with the accent on the OOH, for all you not-Spanish-speaking-quite-yet Gringos out there.)

The whole town gathers in town square for the event and food is served and eaten at plastic tables and chairs under the shade of multi-colored canopies and trees. Dozens of food vendors set up along one side of the plaza and people line up at individual tents to sample their fares.

How to make a Pupusa – Gringo Style

With all this talk about traditional Salvadoran food, I started hankering for a pupusa. So… I did what any self-respecting Gringo would do: went down to the pupuseria and bought a few. Yummy.

Traditional Dishes Make for Good Eats at Las Cofradias Restaurant

I’ve met plenty of people who are all for trying typical El Salvadoran food, but are a bit uneasy about eating at a typical El Salvadoran cafeteria-type restaurant. The answer to that is La Cofradias in Colonia Escalon. (What other neighborhood would have a fancy typical El Salvadoran restaurant???)

My favorite part about Las Cofradias is its extensive dinner buffet, served nightly. There are over 60 traditional dishes to choose from, with an extensive vegetarian selection as well. I’m a sucker for tamales and to drink I always get the horchata, but there are empanadas, pupusas, gallina, chilate, nuegados, atole, fried yuca and more. Basically, if it is served in El Salvador you can find it here.
