Traditional Dishes Make for Good Eats at Las Cofradias Restaurant

I’ve met plenty of people who are all for trying typical El Salvadoran food, but are a bit uneasy about eating at a typical El Salvadoran cafeteria-type Lascofradiasrestaurantrestaurant. The answer to that is La Cofradias in Colonia Escalon. (What other neighborhood would have a fancy typical El Salvadoran restaurant???)

My favorite part about Las Cofradias is its extensive dinner buffet, served nightly. There are over 60 traditional dishes to choose from, with an extensive vegetarian selection as well. I’m a sucker for tamales and to drink I always get the horchata, but there are empanadas, pupusas, gallina, chilate, nuegados, atole, fried yuca and more. Basically, if it is served in El Salvador you can find it here.

In general I have heard very few complaints about how the buffet is managed. Usually it is kept well stocked and items are served hot. The staff is helpful, although sometimes it can get quite busy and be hard to catch a staff member’s attention.

The atmosphere is nice, with food set out on traditional-looking pieces of black pottery. Diners are often foreigners, as the buffet can be a bit pricey for locals, at US $8 a head. Also, considering the fact that the same food can be bought at any comedor, and it most likely doesn’t even compete with their grandma’s home cooking. Add to that the fact that it is located one block from the Radisson Hotel in Colonia Escalon, and you can see why it is more popular with the tourist crowd.

Las Cofradias Restaurant is open Monday 4 pm – 11 pm, Tuesday to Saturday from 8 am – 1 am and Sunday from 10 am – 11 pm.

The address is CL El Mirador with 85 Av Nte No 643, Colonia Escalon.

The Las Cofradias web-site is located at www.lascofradias.com, although the site is currently under construction.
