La Cocina de Mi Abuela Restaurant in Apaneca

Once you’ve finished exploring Juayúa I recommend you continue traveling a little further down the road to the quiet and charming mountain town of Apaneca. There is something special about this Photo by Moris TN Apaneca El Salvadorfriendly little town; people from all over the country claim it as their home away from home, their weekend getaway.

One of the biggest attractions in Apaneca is the restaurant La Cocina de Mi Abuela. Well known across the country and fondly remembered by El Salvadoreans living abroad it is an extremely popular place for wealthy San Salvadorean families to enjoy, and draws a large foreign crowd as well.

La Cocina de Mi Abuela, which when translated means, “The Kitchen of my Grandmother” is everything that your grandma’s kitchen should be. The restaurant, located in a beautifully decorated colonial-era house, has an all around homey kind of feel. Seating is spacious, and garden areas filled with different wildlife and fountains make for the ultimate dining atmosphere. For the best views ask for a table on the covered veranda out back.

The smell that drifts from the kitchen is surely that of Abuela’s secret recipes of traditional Salvadorean dishes and an array of other delicacies.

After you enjoy your dinner, you can stop in at the gift shop to pick up a token with which to remember your trip to La Cocina de Mi Abuela, which is held fondly in the hearts of El Salvadoreans far and wide.

La Cocina de Mi Abuela is only open on the weekend, Saturday and Sunday from 11:30 am to 5:30 pm, but the trip is definitely worth it.

You can get to Apaneca by bus from Sonsonate and Ahuachapán, the trips take an hour and thirty minutes and an hour respectively.
