The Majestic Apaneca – La Laguna Verde

There is just something special about the Apaneca region. The El Salvador Gringo has heard story after story from El Salvadoreans just gushing about how beautiful, how amazing, how tranquil, how wonderful it all is! (The list goes on and on!) Therefore, I decided to sit down and talk with a friend who has grown up traveling from the city (San Salvador) to Apaneca and the Ruta de los Flores. I will be taking bits and pieces of what he has shared with me, and sharing them with you.

Part 1 of our Journey (even though this is entry number 3 about Apaneca) is La Laguna Verde, or the Green Lagoon. No particular reason or order, I just had it scribbled down on my notepad in the biggest script.LagunaVerdeApaneca

Laguna Verde is actually just past the actual town of Apaneca. Once you get out of town, look for the sign for the Villa Suizas turnoff. Take that and continue for about a mile (a 4WD vehicle is highly recommended, especially in the rainy season). From there it is a 2.5 mile hike to the Lagoon.

The lake, located in the crater of an extinct volcano is absolutely amazing to see. I have been warned that there are some strong whirlpools in the Laguna Verde, and therefore it is important to swim with caution.

Another crater lake in the Apaneca area is the Laguna de las Ninfas. These are two of the most popular places to visit in the area. The image, obviously not taken by me, pretty much takes your breathe away. It is easy to see why this is one spot you should definitely visit while in Apaneca, or traveling the Ruta de los Flores.
