Mauricio Funes Elected into Office

It’s all over international news headlines: El Salvador has peacefully elected a leftist president to office for the first time in the country’s history.

The Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front, FMLN, has won the presidency, with Mauricio Funes, a former television journalist and newcomer to politics has their leader. The former guerrilla army peacefully won the battle this time, as opposed to the vicious 12 year civil war that ended just over 17 years ago.

Ichanmichen Tourist Center in La Paz

One kilometer south of the La Paz city Zacatecoluca you will find the Ichanmichen Tourist Center, a fun place to spend the whole day with the family.

Zacatecoluca is a charming little city in itself, not much to do but relax and chat with the locals, and visit the Santa Lucia Cathedral. Just south of town however, you will find Ichamichen, which means “cave of small fish” in the Nahuatl language.

Indigenous People in Apaneca

Apaneca is one of the best places in El Salvador to get in touch with the native indigenous people.

This picture comes from MrRandMcnally of a group singing in the language of the Nahuatl: Nahuat or Pipil.

The locals are friendly. If you speak a little Spanish I recommend you ask them about their lives, it is a great way to get a feel for the people of El Salvador. Even if you don’t speak Spanish, they are welcoming and will talk to you, and if you’re lucky, play you music!

One thing is for sure… in the race to be “the next Costa Rica” El Salvador is not sitting on its laurels. On the contrary, the Ministry of Tourism is putting into action plans that will increase El Salvador’s attractiveness as a travel and tourism, and hopefully catapult El Salvador to the popularity of Costa Rica.

Not that we want El Salvador to become just like Costa Rica… in my opinion the country is a little too worn-down and common when it comes to tourists. And we don’t want another Panama either… the infrastructure is nice, the first-world prices are not.
