The Museo ¡Ajá! Centro de Culturas y Artes Populares is a great way to spend an afternoon discovering arts and culture in Santa Ana. The Museum is open from 3 pm to 7 pm Wednesday to Sunday and admission is free! Visitors wishing to tour around the museum Wednesday to Friday need to set an appointment.

Free Text Messages in El Salvador

The Other El Salvador.com has put this link up on how to send free text messages from the internet to any El Salvadoran cell phone: http://www.svcommunity.org/code/mensajitos.php

Not sure if it works, but I figured I would put it up there and give it a shot. I’m not too huge on the text messaging, but I know it is getting pretty popular, so hopefully this link can help some of you out there save your minutes for more important things than mini-messages.

Organic Farm and Hotel in El Salvador

Once you have landed in El Sal, you will need a place to stay. There are your standard options within the city, major hotel names like the Marriott, Holiday Inn, Radisson, InterContinental types, and then there are a whole slew of other types of hotels and hostels.

For something even more different, check out the Hotel Lisa Guest House, an organic farm/hotel located only 30 minutes north of San Salvador, just off the main road to Honduras (Troncal del Norte).

The rooms are comfortable, large, and private, with double beds, and bunk beds for children. Room with A/C, a ceiling fan, and a TV and a private bath cost only US $25 for two people, and Read more

Renting a Car in El Salvador

Driving in El Salvador, especially in San Salvador, can be a little intimidating if you’ve only ever driven on proper North American roads (excluding Manhattan, obviously – if you can navigate that city, you will be just fine…)

Be alert, traffic is fluid, lanes might as well not even exist; you have to know where every car is at all times, that way if you need to shift lanes, you can do so easily. Basically, you have to drive with the awareness that they taught you in driver’s ed, but obey none of the rules!

To rent a vehicle you need a valid driver’s license that is at least one year old. You must also have one of the following Read more

Landing at the Comalapa International Airport

The Comalapa International Airport is located 45 minutes outside of San Salvador, and is the main airport for passengers and cargo coming into the country. It has all the comforts of a modern airport: duty-free shops, excellent restaurants, tourist and information centers, and all the major rental car kiosks.

Upon arrival to the airport you first have to pay the entrance fee ($10 for 90 days.) After you purchase your card you have to pass through immigration, where they check your passport and card. Then it is on to baggage claim.

After you have gotten your luggage the next step is to proceed through to customs. In general customs officials are friendly and efficient, although due to heightened security in Read more

It is the most comprehensive directory for all things El Salvador that I have found on the net.

Semana Santa in El Salvador

It’s the Sunday before Good Friday (Palm Sunday for all of you who never took catechism seriously) and that means everyone in El Salvador, and all of Latin America for that matter, are looking forward to Semana Santa.

What is technically a celebration of Jesus’ offering his life sacrificially for mankind’s sins has now developed into one of the biggest weeks for partying and vacationing in El Salvador.

San Salvadorans in particular love to get away from the hustle and bustle of the big city and either head up into the mountains or down the coast to the beach. Costa del Sol is actually one of the biggest destinations for city dwellers to head for drinks, music and parties.
