On your way to the Costa del Sol, make sure you stop by the Jaltepeque Estuary, which is located at Kilometer 56 coming from San Salvador, traveling alone the Costa del Sol highway to the beach.
The Jaltepeque Estuary is one of the 125 protected areas in El Salvador, and also has an additional 28 kilometers of land which are home to a number of birds and types of mollusks.
If you visit the estuary make sure you go to La Puntilla where you will see many boats for hire. For up to $50 for larger groups, and less for smaller, they will take you through the mangrove forest to where Rio Lempa meets the ocean. The price is definitely worth the trip, but make sure you bargain at least a little bit, never accept the first price they give you.
The estuary is also an extremely popular place for fishing, much to the dismay of many supporters of conserving this natural eco-system. Fish caught in this area are typically pompano, rooster and mackerel.
