Driving in El Salvador, especially in San Salvador, can be a little intimidating if you’ve only ever driven on proper North American roads (excluding Manhattan, obviously – if you can navigate that city, you will be just fine…)
Be alert, traffic is fluid, lanes might as well not even exist; you have to know where every car is at all times, that way if you need to shift lanes, you can do so easily. Basically, you have to drive with the awareness that they taught you in driver’s ed, but obey none of the rules!
To rent a vehicle you need a valid driver’s license that is at least one year old. You must also have one of the following valid credit cards: American Express, Master Card, or Visa. Drivers between the ages of 21 and 25 are an additional charge.
