West of La Libertad – Popular Surf Spots

Past La Libertad to the west there are plenty of other beaches to visit: Conchalio, San Blas, El Cocal, El Majahual and El Sunzal. El Sunzal is located at Kilometer 42 from San Salvador, and it is one of the most popular surfing El zonte beach surfdestinations in El Salvador, in all of Central America actually.

If you don’t know how to surf, but you want to learn, then El Sunzal is the place to go. Many of the skilled local surfers make a living by teaching foreigners and other Salvadorans who wan to learn how to surf. Renting a surfboard for a day costs only about $12–$15 dollars.

El Tunco (The Pig) is a large rock that splits the El Sunzal beach into two sides. One side of the beach is open to all, while one side is restricted to the local population only. When the sun goes down the partying starts. There are a number of small restaurants, lounges, clubs and fancy restaurants to choose from in El Sunzal.

If you are the adventurous type and want to get even further away from the popular beach spot of El Sunzal than try El Zonte, which is just a little farther down the highway at Kilometer 53. El Zonte is a good place to surf as well. There are a couple of hotels and hostels in el Zonte, so make sure you make reservations if you are going on a holiday, weekend, or in high season.
