After Juayua: Apaneca and its Coffee

After Juayua: Apaneca and its Coffee

Apaneca’s location is what makes it perfect for harvesting coffee. At 1455 meters above sea level, it is the city with the highest altitude in El Salvador, and the next stop after Juayua on the Ruta de las Flores. Due to its height, some of the best coffees in the world are produced here.

Apaneca means “the river of the winds” and the city holds up to its name, with constant breezes throughout the day. Many wind barriers are created using coffee bushes, making the whole region very picturesque.

There are lost of different sights to see in Apaneca, such as the Laguna Verde and the Laguna de las Ninfas, and touring a coffee plantation is a must.

Helpful Information for Tourists in Juayua

The greatest resource you can have when it comes to travel in Juayua (not counting a Spanish-English dictionary if you don’t speak the language) is the information available on www.juayua.com. The website is actually all in Spanish… so you will need that dictionary for sure!

Juayua.com has photo galleries of the city, a calendar of events, hotel listings, info on tour companies, restaurants, news, transportation and more. It is like one stop shopping for this little town that is talked about all over the internet as one of the best stops on the Route of the Flowers.

I think my favorite is the “Comida Rapida” section, which highlights the three “fast food” places in Juayua, all right by city Read more

Budget Hostel/Hotel in Juayua and Tour Operation

Budget Hostel/Hotel in Juayua and Tour Operation

Budget accomodations in Juayua can be found at Hotel Anahuac on 5a av norte at 1a calle pte near the town center. A night starts at $7 for a bed in either of the  dorm style rooms. There are also four private rooms that open up onto a large courtyard that serves as kind of a community hang out spot.

The hotel is a colonial home that has been converted, and keeps a very low key, cool, cozy style. Hammocks are strung up between support beams, there is a common kitchen for guests to share, and a number of random rooms to chill in with free internet access.

The private rooms have hot water bathrooms, the dorm rooms have a shared Read more

Hiking and Trekking Outside Juayua

Hiking and Trekking Outside Juayua

Juayua is one of the best places for eco-tourism in El Salvador – in all of Central America actuallly. The landscapes are incredible, yes, but what makes it so great is that it is still a virtual unknown in comparison to countries like Costa Rica and Panama.

Juayua in particular is popular among tourists that come to El Salvador, but honestly the amount of people who end up here are quite few. The country is still a little more rugged than other popular eco-tourism destinations, but for many, that makes it all the more fun.

In Juayua it is a good idea to ask at your hotel guest for a local guide. Sure, you can hike around yourself, but Read more

Visit to a Coffee Museum and Farm Outside Juayua

Visit to a Coffee Museum and Farm Outside Juayua

The most popular first stop on the Ruta de los Flores is Juayua. It is most famous for it’s food festival held every weekend, with tons of different dishes to choose from, most of them being carnivorous.

Make sure you plan a trip to Juayua on the weekend to make sure you get to take part in this fabulous event.

Another fun thing to do in Juayua is visit the Coffee Museum in the nearby town called San Jose La Majada. They have a little guided tour that takes you through the coffee mill and shows you the process of making coffee. The museum is across the street from the processing plant, where you might see a Starbucks truck Read more

Eco-Tourism – Natural Protected Area in Perquin

Eco-Tourism - Natural Protected Area in Perquin

The Area Natural Protegida Rio Sapo is home to the cleanest river in El Salvador, the Rio Sapo. It is located Southeast of Perquin, and spans an area of about 14,826 acres.

The Rio Sapo is formed by the Rio Guaco and the Rio Talchiga, which run over several waterfalls before meeting southeast of the city.

If you are heading to the Natural Park on your way to Perquin, take the turn off at Arambala and make sure you are driving in a 4×4 vehicle! The road to the park can get a little rough.

A cool way to get into the park if you have the time is to take the 8 km hike in from Perquin, which takes about Read more

I recently came across this site: The Other El Salvador.com and thought it would be a good thing to share with our base of readers.

Semana Santa in El Salvador

It’s the Sunday before Good Friday (Palm Sunday for all of you who never took catechism seriously) and that means everyone in El Salvador, and all of Latin America for that matter, are looking forward to Semana Santa.

What is technically a celebration of Jesus’ offering his life sacrificially for mankind’s sins has now developed into one of the biggest weeks for partying and vacationing in El Salvador.

San Salvadorans in particular love to get away from the hustle and bustle of the big city and either head up into the mountains or down the coast to the beach. Costa del Sol is actually one of the biggest destinations for city dwellers to head for drinks, music and parties.
