Excellent View, Excellent Food

The restaurant at Hotel Torre Molinos on the shore of Lake Quatepeque is one of the best places to spend an evening enjoying a meal with friends. Don’t come here for the fast service; they take things easy on this side of town. The meal is to be enjoyed to the full, so come here for a true dining experience.

The restaurant overlooks an incredible view of the lake, situated on a deck about 40 feet above ground.

While you may be tempted to order otherwise, trust this Gringo, and stick to the fish. The house special in particular, comes straight from the lake, making it incredibly fresh and delicious.

Remember, service is slow. Save Read more

English News and Events from El Salvador

In an attempt to network you with others out there who share your passion of travel to El Salvador, I would like to point out Tim’s El Salvador Blog. (Okay, you got me, this is partially in response to the nod the El Salvador Gringo got from Tim two weeks ago.) But in all seriousness, Tim knows his stuff.

Although his permanent location is in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Tim has been visiting El Salvador since 2001. His blog mainly focuses on current news and events in El Salvador that relate to the English speaking community interested in this Central American country and is rich in outward links to interesting articles.

Real Estate Investment in El Salvador

El Salvador may not be the first place you think of when it comes to investing in property in Central America, but those who give the country a chance will find practically untouched forests, stunning mountains, and beautiful beaches along the country’s coast.

The real estate in El Salvador varies greatly. As in any third world country there is extreme poverty, but the economy is currently on the rise. There are no restrictions for foreigners to purchase property in urban areas, but rural property is a different story. It can only be purchased by international investors who have industrial plans, and in every case purchase is limited to 600 acres of land.

El Tunco – El Salvador Surfing Hotspot

One of the Gringo’s friends in El Salvador recently suggested publishing a bit on Playa El Tunco, one of the nicest surfing spots in the country. Since the beach is fun, funky, and a hotspot for other wandering gringos, it seemed like a fine idea to me!

El Tunco is pretty much your standard surf town; people are constantly walking up and down the streets in the board shorts, carrying their surf boards down to the beach. The beach isn’t the most ideal place to lounge about, but the surfing is great; just what you would expect from Central America, overhead waves, strong currents, and a long paddle, but the swells are insane and the atmosphere can’t Read more

Cell Phones in El Salvador

In El Salvador the main phone companies use the GSM 850, 900 and 1900 digital systems, so roaming services may be available through your local phone service provider, however generally speaking charges for such calls can be very high.

By purchasing a SIM card from any of the major cell phone service providers and installing it in your phone you can avoid such charges. Prepaid cards can be bought to add credit to the account and generally cost less than $5 US. Calling to the United States and Canada using such cards is very inexpensive; it costs only 10 cents per minute.

If your cell phone is not compatible with a SIM card, or does Read more
